Whitewater Shopping Centre
Architect/Designer: Martha Schwartz Landscape Architects Main Contractor/Customer: John Sisk and Son
With the development of the Whitewater Shopping Centre in County Kildare, Ireland, architects Martha Schwartz Landscape Architects wanted to create a focal point in the centre of the new complex.
Approaching Architen Landrell and in particular the company’s lighting division, they expressed their plans to design eight free standing fabric canopies with internal lighting to create glowing pods ‘suspended’ in the air!
Using PVC coated polyester fabric, Architen Landrell designed and manufactured the pebbled shaped structures along with the supporting steelwork. They then passed over to Architen Lighting to liaise with the lighting scheme designers to produce the finished piece.
Lighting, designed by Equation Lighting, was incorporated inside the skin of the capsules to create a glowing effect. The intensity of the illumination can be controlled by the client, with 16 networked Waterproof Fluorescent lights inside each capsule. Altogether, 128 MT70’s from Encapsulite were used, in 5 double-mast and 3 single-mast capsules, with 64 Galli ACDC White LED narrow beam projectors pointing light from the capsules up and down the masts.
One of the most effective uses of lighting with fabric, no one can deny the striking and unusual impact that these structures make. They bring an artistic and stylish dimension to the shopping centre and provide a centre piece for the site.
