The Lighthouse, Westgate Centre

Client: Sterling House Estates    Year of Completion: 2005
Architect/Designer: Roberts Gardner    Main Contractor/Customer: E G Carter

On the site of what was once the 16th century Bartholomew Hospital and Bartholomew Almshouses, Sterling House Estates embarked on the development of a brand new retail centre for Gloucester.

Known as the Lighthouse, the atrium space which adjoins the main building is so called due to the colour changing fabric beacon installed in the centre and visable from the road at night.

The 7m high and 6m wide fabric cones filters natural and artificial light through its membrane to diffuse the light in a delicate way. Architen Lighting manufactured sixteen lengths of colour changing LEDs which were fitted to the perimeter of the atrium and are controlled by a single LPC1 Pharos DMX controller which monitors light levels.

The ‘Lighthouse’ feature is a demanding test of the capabilities of lighting control. Every 24 hours, a new programme commences, meaning that every day brings a new combination of lighting effects and colours. Between the hours of ten and four, staff at Majestic wine have the ability to change the programe via a wireless remote control. Another wireless device is under the guardianship of the owners, who at any time are able to override the system at the touch of a button.
